The purpose of the foundation is to protect and promote the interests of animals and animal welfare. We support the general public and authorities in matters relating to animal welfare. Our main task is to protect all animals from suffering, poor husbandry and abuse. Around 1,300 animals are cared for at the Birs animal shelter every year and up to 400 animals are placed in new homes. We also run various regional and national animal welfare and education projects focussing on the protection of children and young people. We operate the cantonal reporting centre for the cantons of BS and BL for missing and found animals and process up to 250 reports of unsatisfactory husbandry conditions each year at our animal welfare advice centre.
